Why is Red 40 going away?
The FDA announced an initiative to phase petroleum-based synthetic dyes out of the US food supply, targeting FD&C Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2 and Green 3 by the end of 2026. Major manufacturers including Nestle, General Mills, Kraft Heinz and PepsiCo have publicly committed to transitioning. If your product uses Red 40, reformulation is no longer optional, it is a scheduling question.
What are the natural replacements for Red 40?
The main working options are anthocyanins (red radish, purple carrot, black carrot, hibiscus, red cabbage), beet juice concentrate (betanin), and paprika extract for orange-leaning reds. Each has a different stability profile, and that profile decides where it works.
Red radish / purple carrot (anthocyanins)
Shade: Bright red to pink at low pH
Strengths: Best match for candy and gummy reds, good light stability
Watch out for: Shade shifts toward purple as pH rises above roughly 4
Beet juice (betanin)
Shade: Blue-toned red
Strengths: Vivid shade, clean label recognition
Watch out for: Degrades with heat and long shelf life, best in cold-process or short-life products
Hibiscus
Shade: Deep red
Strengths: Strong in acidic beverages
Watch out for: Can bring its own tart flavor at high use levels
Paprika extract
Shade: Orange-red
Strengths: Very heat stable, oil soluble
Watch out for: Wrong shade for a true candy red, can flavor the product
Carmine
Shade: True red
Strengths: Extremely stable
Watch out for: Insect-derived, so not Kosher and not vegan. We do not recommend it for most reformulations for that reason
How do you keep a natural red from fading?
Fading is usually a formulation problem, not a pigment problem. The levers are pH (keep anthocyanin systems below pH 4 where possible), heat exposure (add color as late in the process as the process allows), light (opaque or UV-protective packaging), and ascorbic acid interactions (vitamin C accelerates fading of some pigments, which matters in fortified gummies). A supplier who knows your process conditions can usually solve fade before it happens by picking the right pigment and load.
What does reformulation actually involve?
A typical color match runs in stages: you send the current product and target shade, the supplier matches pigment and dose to your process, you run a bench sample, then a pilot batch with real heat and real packaging, then shelf-life checks. Is Red 40 banned right now?
No. The FDA initiative is a phase-out with industry cooperation, targeting the end of 2026. But major retailers and brands are moving ahead of the deadline, so buyers are already asking suppliers for natural-color versions.
Will a natural red cost more than Red 40?
Usually yes per pound of colorant, because synthetic dyes are extremely concentrated. The gap narrows when you count it per finished unit, since use levels are matched to the target shade.
Can I get an exact shade match to my current product?
A close match is almost always possible. A pixel-perfect match under every light condition is not a fair expectation of any natural pigment, and any supplier promising that should be pressed on the details.
Do natural colors change the taste?
At normal use levels most do not. Hibiscus and paprika can contribute flavor at high loads, which is part of why pigment selection is application-specific.
Are natural colors Kosher?
Plant-derived colors generally can be certified. Carmine cannot, since it is insect-derived. Flavor Frenzy's natural colors are produced in a Kosher certified facility.
